Saturday saw the return of League Rugby to Stubbing Lane, with Worksop facing Amber Valley. After a much-improved pre-season led by John Williams and Nick Barrett the home side felt they had a point to prove and in the opening exchanges showed good pace and handling skills. The set piece was solid setting up a good attacking platform from which Worksop benefited early on with a number of scores from the back line via Jackson Nunn and Kiel Billam. Worksop continued to press hard and gaps opened up and were exploited by the Worksop back line, a number of opportunities were not taken but the desire to attack was clear to see and more tries followed from Billam and Nunn. Follow up play was much improved on last season and forwards and backs linked well in attack and the defence was good. The skipper John William has also added a try for Worksop
The second half saw Worksop struggle to hold on to the ball and give away numerous penalties and Amber Valley came back into the game with a couple of tries from some short drives from their forward pack, but Worksop did counter and Waddell scored in the corner mid-way through the half.
A game of two halves for Worksop an impressive first 40 minutes showing pace, power and good game management, but the second half shows there is still lots to work on in training.
An impressive debut by hooker Josh Kinta was good to see and Billam and Nunn both looked positive in attack and looking for gaps.
Tries
Billam – 3
Nunn – 2
Williams -1
Waddell - 1
